De overzichtstentoonstelling Martin Wong: Malicious Mischief toont het werk van de Chinees-Amerikaanse kunstenaar Martin Wong. Wong staat bekend om zijn verbeeldingen van sociale, seksuele en politieke kwesties die spelen in de Verenigde Staten in de jaren 1970 tot en met de jaren 1990. In zijn artistieke praktijk, die sterk beïnvloed is door zijn ervaring met de countercultures van San Francisco en Eureka, Californië, en New York, combineert hij elementen uit de Chinese iconografie, portretkunst, landschapsschilderkunst, ‘urban poetry’, graffiti, gevangenis ethiek en gebarentaal. Als verhalenverteller en kritische observator van het stadsleven geeft Wong een poëtische kijk op de sociale realiteit van gemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen. In plaats van de hardheid van hun bestaan te benadrukken, schept Wong in zijn werk ruimte voor schoonheid en inclusiviteit, waarin bestaande opvattingen over klasse, ras en seksuele geaardheid worden heroverwogen en opnieuw vorm krijgen.
In november zullen we samen met een curator uit het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam de wereld van Martin Wong instappen. Samen met de curator zullen we door de tentoonstelling heen lopen, en zal zij ons meer vertellen over Wong en zijn werk en hoe de tentoonstelling tot stand gekomen is. The retrospective exhibition Martin Wong: Malicious Mischief shows the work of Chinese-American artist Martin Wong. Wong is known for his depictions of social, sexual and political issues in the United States from the 1970s to the 1990s. In his artistic practice, which is strongly influenced by his experience with the countercultures of San Francisco and Eureka, California, and New York, he combines elements from Chinese iconography, portraiture, landscape painting, ‘urban poetry’, graffiti, prison ethics and sign language. As a storyteller and critical observer of urban life, Wong provides a poetic look at the social reality of marginalised communities. Instead of emphasising the harshness of their existence, Wong creates space for beauty and inclusivity in his work, in which existing views on class, race and sexual orientation are reconsidered and reshaped.
In November we will enter the world of Martin Wong together with a curator from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Together with the curator we will walk through the exhibition, and she will tell us more about Wong and his work and how the exhibition came about.
